Google Extensions: What are they and what do they do?

Google extensions are small pieces of software that work in the Google Chrome browser. Many times, when extensions are active they will appear next to your address bar towards the top of your screen.

Adding extensions to your browser can make using the Internet easier. For example, in a previous post I introduced you to the URL shortener. This tool is a downloadable browser extension that will shorten your URL or generate a QR code for whatever page you’re on. By using this extension you save yourself time in both shortening a URL or generating a QR code because you don’t have to leave your current page in order to accomplish those tasks. Other extensions can connect to Google apps to make saving items to your Google Drive easier and still other types of extensions focus on aesthetics (like changing your “New Tab” screen).
